What Is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization — the discipline of winning the answer itself, not just a spot in the results list.
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring content so that search engines can lift a direct answer out of it, rather than just linking to it. Instead of competing only for a click, you're competing tobe the answer: in Google's Featured Snippets, in the "People Also Ask" boxes, and in voice-assistant responses.
How AEO differs from classic SEO
Regular SEO (see what SEO actually covers) aims to rank a page in the results list. AEO goes a layer deeper: it's not enough to rank — the content has to be shaped so a search engine can extract a clean, self-contained answer from it. That means:
- Writing the actual question as a heading, in the words a customer would use.
- Answering it directly and concisely in the first sentence or two that follow.
- Backing it with structured data (FAQPage or HowTo schema) that spells the Q&A pairing out explicitly for machines to read.
Where AEO shows up
The most visible surface is Google's featured snippet — the boxed answer above the normal results. Right below it usually sits "People Also Ask," an expandable list of related questions pulled from exactly this kind of structured content. The same approach also improves how voice assistants read your content aloud.
AEO and GEO are close cousins
AEO optimizes for Google's own answer surfaces; GEO optimizes for generative AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity that synthesize an answer from multiple sources. The techniques overlap heavily — clear, well-structured, directly-answering content — but GEO also cares about how citable and quotable your specific phrasing is to a language model, not just to Google's extraction algorithm.
FAQ
→Is AEO the same as featured snippet optimization?
Featured snippets are the most visible example, but AEO is broader — it also covers People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant answers, and (increasingly) the way generative AI engines lift a short answer from your page. The common thread is structuring content so the answer can be extracted cleanly.
→Do I need special tools for AEO?
Not really — the main requirements are disciplined content structure (clear questions as headings, direct answers immediately after) and structured data (FAQPage, HowTo, or Article schema) that makes the Q&A explicit to machines. No paid tool replaces getting those two things right.
→Does AEO reduce my website traffic?
It can, for a single query — if the searcher gets a full answer in the box, they may not click through. But AEO also expands your visibility to queries you'd never rank a full click for, and it builds the same authority signals GEO relies on to get your brand cited by AI engines instead of a competitor.
